YUBA CITY, Ca. - Police in Yuba City need the public's help to find several cat burglars, who went to extreme measures to steal a fortune in gold at a jewelry store.
Dozens of empty trays are all that's left inside the Nurmahal Jewelry store in Yuba City. Thieves made off with all the 22-karat gold necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
Manager Dinesh Virma said he got the call early Monday morning about the burglary at his parents' store. Virma said thieves snatched hundreds of thousands of dollars of jewelry after cutting a hole in the roof of the business next door, Hillcrest Hobbies.
The thieves climbed down inside that business and then cut another hole in an adjoining wall. They then directly drilled into the safe inside the jewelry store. The back wall of that safe is more than 4 inches thick.
"You have to cut through a safe, noise, people around," Virma said. "I don't understand why no one heard anything."
"Somebody planned this out very carefully, thought about it very thoroughly, knew exactly where the weaknesses were and knew exactly how to pull this off," Hillcrest Hobbies' Bill Terbrush said.
The motion detectors and store surveillance cameras never picked up the thieves because all of the action was inside or behind the safe.
Virma said he's offering a reward to help find the thieves.
