TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida Gov. Rick Scott is praising a decision by the Pentagon to decrease the number of furlough days over the next two months.

Scott has been highly critical of federal budget cuts because it meant that Florida National Guardsmen and technicians were being forced to take furloughs during hurricane season.

Defense officials said Tuesday steps have been taken to cut the number of required furlough days from 11 to six for this fiscal year. As a result, the final furlough day for most workers will be next week.

Scott called the decision "great news" but said he is concerned about more cuts coming when the new federal budget year starts in October.

The governor has talked to federal officials about his concerns that the furloughs could strain Florida's readiness capability.
