JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a suspicious death early Saturday morning.

A possible drive-by shooting in the 5100 block of Missouri Avenue in the Biltmore section of the Northside killed 13-year-old Jazmine Shelton and left 14-year-old Megan Simmons in very critical life threatening condition, according to JSO.

The teens were inside a mobile home with three adults, including Shleton's mother, when they were struck by gunfire at 4:44 a.m., according to JSO homicide Sgt. Jay Farhat.

Simmons, 14, was taken to UF Health Jacksonville for treatment, but is not expected to survive.

According to police, the victims were friends and are not relatives.

During an 11:30 a.m. media briefing Saturday, Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford appealed to the community to step-up and say something if you saw something.

Rutherford stated he went to the scene of the shooting himself and counted at least 12 bullet holes in the mobile home where the girls were hit.

Rutherford said this morning's shooting reminded him of the shooting death of 8-year-old DreShawna Davis who was shot and killed inside her grandmother's home in July of 2006.

"I'm angry," Rutherford stated, "it's got to stop."

Anyone who has any information about this case is asked to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500.

To remain anonymous and receive a reward up to $3,000 if your tip leads to an arrest, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
