Shooting kills 13-year-old girl, critically injures 14-year-old

  • On Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 4:44 a.m. police responded to a call at 5221 Missouri Avenue reference to someone shot.
  • Megan Simmons, 14, is not expected to survive her injuries.
  • Jazmine Shelton's mother Pancy Shelton was also in the mobile home when the girls were struck, along with two other adults.
  • Megan Simmons, 14 was transported to UF Health Jacksonville in life-threatening condition.
  • Upon arrival police found Jazmine Shelton, 13, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
  • Shelton was inside her mobile home when a suspect(s) fired into the living room area where she was with her friend Megan.
  • Pancy Shelton is mourning the loss of her daughter and another family is praying while their teenager is in the hospital. Neighbors set up a memorial for Jazmine.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating a suspected drive-by shooting that killed a 13-year-old in her home and critically wounded her 14-year-old friend.
