VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. - Officials are flying the purple flag at Volusia County beaches to warn swimmers of sharks in the water.
The flag usually alerts people to jellyfish man o' war.
Five people have had close encounters in the past two weeks, including a high school student who was bit on the shoulder in Ormond Beach on Labor Day.
"Today, we're flying it because we do have a lot of bait fish out there right now. A little bit more than normal, so with that comes the bigger fish that feed on the little fish, including sharks," said Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Capt. Tammy Marris.
An 11-year-old girl was bit off Ponce Inlet two weeks ago.
