JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Marissa Alexander, the woman making national headlines after being sentenced to 20 years for firing what she calls a warning shot at her now ex-husband, appeared before a judge Thursday morning.
Judge James Daniel scheduled a bond hearing for Alexander that will be held Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. Alexander has been held in the Lowell Correctional Facility since being sentenced last May.
Daniel scheduled a new trial for March 31, 2014.
In September, an appeals court ordered the case remanded to Duval County to be retried. The appeals court found that Judge Daniel improperly instructed the jury, stating that Alexander needed to
prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she was defending herself.
Alexander claimed that she fired the gun to scare off her her abusive husband
during an altercation.
