Poll: Do you agree with the judge's decision? By Jessica Clark First Coast News ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL -- Justin Barber, convicted of killing his wife April on the beach in 2002, will spend the rest of his life in prison. Barber faced the possibility of receiving the death penalty, as recommended by the jury that convicted him. It was an 8 to 4 vote in favor of the death penalty. However, the judge went against the recommendation and sentenced Barber to life in prison. Judge Edward Hedstrom said the jury did not receive enough information during the penalty phase in order to make a recommendation that he could consider with great weight. Barber’s family as well as April’s cried in the courtroom. After the sentencing, Justin’s mother, Linda Barber said, “Today does not matter.” She said Justin and his attorney will pursue an appeal. She added that the sentence did not matter to Justin. She said he did not kill April, and they will prove it. Patricia Parrish, April’s aunt, spoke to the media after the sentencing. She said her family did not have a preference about the sentence, that they just wanted to have a guilty verdict. Related articles:
