ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. -- Strip searches are going to be a thing of the past at the Alachua County jail as they implement a brand new way to search inmates.

Alachua County has installed a new full body scanner from Secure Pass at the county jail, said Lt. Todd Kelly with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office.

The device allows jail inmates to be searched in less than seven seconds by creating a digital image of the body.

The scanner uses the same technology which is already in use at airports, according to a press release.

Inmates will be scanned in the booking area of the jail. The speed of the scanning process will cut down in the amount of staff and time spent on searching each inmate, according to Kelly, a traditional strip search is estimated to take up 15 minutes and more than one staff member.

Kelly says the scanner can also detect weapons, phones, handcuff keys and other contraband that can be stuffed in the body cavity of an inmate, which a traditional strip search could miss.

"We are committed to providing a safe environment for employees at the jail and want criminals to know that the Alachua County Jail is not where you want to try to smuggle contraband," says Sheriff Sadie Darnell.
