Weeki Wachee, Florida -- A woman was killed in a tragic accident at a home in Weeki Wachee after she was crushed by a homemade elevator.
Hernando Sheriff's deputies say the "lift", or homemade elevator, was constructed about 17 years ago from a fork lift, wood and welded metal for the three-story home in the 6200 block of Island Drive for one of the residents of the home, Jean Blair, who gets around in a motorized wheelchair.
While Blair's husband and son were away for several hours, deputies say a friend, Margaret Harrison, was supposed to stop by to keep her company. Blair sent the elevator down to the first floor so it would be there when Harrison arrived.
After an hour and a half passed and Harrison didn't show, Blair got concerned and called Harrison's boyfriend. When he came over to the home, he saw Harrison's car in the driveway and when he went over to the elevator he found her underneath it. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
After inspecting the elevator, the county's Building Department discovered a permit was never issued allowing the elevator to be added to the home and it had dangerous electrical connections. It was deemed illegal and unsafe and shut down.
Harrison's death was deemed accidental.
