Philadelphia police are investigating how a preschooler got hold of eight bags of crack cocaine and $173 and brought it to class Tuesday morning.

The 4-year-old Head Start student at Thomas Mifflin Elementary School showed the cash to a classmate, who notified a teacher's aide. The boy then gave the aide a small amount of an off-white, chunky substance from one of his pockets, WPVI-TV reported.

The aide confiscated the "dime bags" and the money and took the child to the principal, who called police. Officers and a K-9 unit searched the classroom.

As a precaution, the boy was taken to a hospital to be sure he had not ingested any drugs.

School district spokesman Fernando Gallard said the boy would not be disciplined or identified. Police were planning to interview his father.

One parent who came to pick up her daughter called the incident "upsetting."

"I'm shocked a kid was able to bring drugs into school," Jennifer Gallagher toldThe Philadelphia Inquirer.

The school, in the city's East Falls neighborhood, has about 300 students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. It's described as having "a family atmosphere."
