LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - Polk County law enforcement Law and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have responded to multiple sightings of a monkey in a Lakeland subdivision.
The Lakeland Ledger reports that on Monday, a woman spotted a monkey eating a grapefruit in her backyard. It's unclear where the monkey came from, but it's suspected to be a Patas monkey.
Officials placed an infrared camera in the woman's yard, hoping to capture pictures of the primate, which was described as being two to three feet tall.
Escaped Patas monkeys made national news after getting away from a Polk County wildlife park in 2008.
Authorities said the last of those monkeys was found in December 2008 after eight months of attempts to recapture them.
