ORLANDO, Fla. - An Orlando police officer shot and killed a driver early Tuesday morning after the driver rammed his police cruiser and tried to run him over, police said.
The shooting occurred on Wentwood Avenue and Thorpe Avenue, which is near the intersection of Lee Road and Edgewater Drive.
Police said they initially pulled the vehicle over in the area of Colonial Drive and Orange Blossom Trail at 6 a.m., but the suspect fled.
The fleeing vehicle was then spotted and pulled over on Wentwood Avenue. The officer exited his vehicle, when the driver tried to flee again.
"We know that vehicles can easily kill people. A vehicle, 2,000 to 2,500 pounds, could easily kill you," said Orlando police spokesman Sgt. Jim Young.
Police did not say how many shots were fired, but the victim was dead when emergency officials arrived, according to the Orlando Fire Department.
The officer was not hurt, but he was shaken up. He will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Several police cars surrounded the area after the shooting and a large area near the suspect's vehicle was taped off.
