SMYRNA, TN (WSMV/AP) -- At least one person was killed after a small plane that departed from Smyrna crashed Wednesday into a wooded area in northern Indiana.

The Cirrus SR 22 aircraft crashed sometime between 11 a.m. and noon about one mile southeast of the Gary/Chicago International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

An FAA spokesperson said the number of people dying in the crash is unknown and "the local coroner will identify the deceased."

Gary police spokesman Commander Shawn Jones says the plane crashed in a wooded area about 400 to 500 yards from the nearest structure.

The FAA says the plane is registered to Gandy AIR LLC in St. Augustine, FL. A phone call to the business rang unanswered Wednesday afternoon.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, and no other details have been released, including the identities of anyone on board.
