RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Two top state elections officials want an investigation of $235,000 in donations to dozens of North Carolina candidates from a sweepstakes cafe operator.

Many of the checks were mailed from a Charlotte lobbying firm where Gov. Pat McCrory worked until just before he took office. He denies wrongdoing.

Records show the checks came from an account that received money from a software company connected to what Florida prosecutors call a nearly $300 million illegal gambling operation. North Carolina law forbids using corporate money for political campaigns.

The donations made company co-owner Chase Burns of Anadarko, Okla., the largest donor in North Carolina in the 2012 election cycle.

Democrat Larry Leake, the North Carolina Elections Board chairman, and Chuck Winfree, the board's top Republican, said the agency should investigate the donations.
