VALLEY SPRINGS, Ca. (KXTV) - Calaveras County Sheriff's deputies and detectives continue to search for the man believed to be responsible for the death of an 8-year-old girl on Saturday afternoon.
Deputies say Leila Fowler's 12-year-old brother saw an an older white or Mexican man in a dark shirt enter his family's home Saturday night. After he called his parents for help, the boy found Leila dead and the intruder running off on foot.
Arriving deputies focused there investigation on a short stretch of Rippon Rd. near the home where Fowler was killed. The surrounding access points leading into Rippon Rd. were all blocked off by deputies, limiting entrance only to locals.
On Sunday, the Calaveras County Coroner confirmed Leila Fowler had been stabbed to death.
Investigators said they have DNA and fingerprints to aid them in the search for the person responsible.
Austin Fritz, who knows the victim's sister said, "We're friends with the girl who got harmed, her older sister. Nice family. You know you don't expect something like this to happen to them."
Neighbors said they have a neighborhood watch group in place but nobody recalled seeing a stranger come through in recent days. They did say the neighborhood contains many foreclosed homes and they suspected deputies would check each one.
