(CNN) -- A three-day standoff in New Jersey involving a gunman barricaded with children ended Sunday morning, authorities said.

Trenton police Lt. Stephen Varn said three children inside the home were safe, but would not comment when asked if there were any dead bodies in the house.

Earlier, law enforcement officers said the gunman killed his girlfriend and a child in the home, The Times of Trenton reported.

The gunman was taken into custody Sunday morning and the area is secure, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman told CNN. Grossman also would not comment on reports that a mother and a child were killed in the home.

The hostage situation began Friday afternoon, police said, but it was unclear how old the children are or their relationship to the man.

The gunman was holding three children hostage, officials said.

Surrounding blocks were evacuated as authorities, including a SWAT team and a hostage negotiator, tried to work toward a peaceful resolution.
