JOHANNESBURG (AP) -- South African construction worker Welcome Tempa says he used to pray for Nelson Mandela when he was a child. Now 63, Tempa is praying for the former president again.

Mandela is being treated in a Pretoria hospital for a recurring lung infection. There's been no official update on the 94-year-old's condition today, but a government statement Saturday described it as "serious but stable."

The 94-year-old was freed in 1990 after 27 years as a prisoner of South Africa's white racist rulers and was elected president in all-race elections in 1994. Mandela has been vulnerable to respiratory problems since contracting tuberculosis during his imprisonment.

The anti-apartheid leader has now been taken to a hospital four times since December, with the last discharge coming on April 6 after doctors diagnosed him with pneumonia and drained fluid from his lung area.
