A 13-year-old reportedly led Ankeny police on a car chase this weekend through a residential area, smashing through several construction barriers before slamming into a tree.

The teen, whom The Des Moines Register is not naming because he is a minor, was arrested at gunpoint and charged with OWI, reckless driving, eluding and driving without a license.

He was transported to a hospital for a minor injury to his face and was later released to a relative, said Ankeny Police Captain Joe Schaffer.

Police say the chase started around 1:45 a.m. Sunday after someone called 911 to report a car being driven recklessly with a flat tire.

Officers spotted the car and tried to pull it over near Sunrise Park in Ankeny at the intersection of Southeast Sharon Drive and Peterson Drive.

The car sped away on Peterson Drive through a construction zone, where it hit multiple construction barriers.

At one point the driver briefly stopped the car before accelerating away again, Schaffer said.

The chase came to an end when the driver turned left onto Southeast Wanda Drive, lost control and hit a tree. Two officers approached the vehicle, guns drawn, and ordered the teen out of the car. The teen complied with officers' commands, was taken into custody and later submitted to a breath test.

The chase lasted less than a minute and spanned about five blocks. The car hit speeds of about 50 mph in a 25-mph zone, Schaffer said.

The car belonged to a relative of the teen, Schaffer said.
