THP confirmed to 10News there are multiple fatalities and injuries in a crash in Jefferson County, Tennessee.

Officials say a passenger bus traveling eastbound on I-40 near mile marker 423 crossed the median and crashed into a tractor trailer and passenger car that were heading westbound.

According to Associated Press, eight people died in the crash.

THP said the tractor trailer caught fire and the bus overturned.

Front Street Baptist Church in Statesville, North Carolina tells 10News they believe the bus involved in the crash belongs to their church. Dionne Stutts from the church confirmed they had a church bus on the way back from Fall Jubilee in Gatlinburg. She says the group on board is called "The Young at Heart" and they're mostly ages 55 and up.

The church says they've been trying to call people on the bus but can't get a hold of them. They have several church members on the way to the scene.

An EMS official told 10News 20 ambulances and 5 helicopters responded from multiple counties.

UT Medical Center says they are expecting 14 patients from the scene. They say 11 have arrived so far, four of which arrived via Lifestar.

Dispatchers confirmed Interstate 40 is closed in both directions at mile marker 423 in Jefferson County. They are diverting traffic and advising everyone to avoid the scene.

TDOT Smartway reports the wreck is estimated to be cleared by 9:00 p.m.
