LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- "We've made the first 3D printable gun," said Sean Kubin.

In May of 2013, Cody Wilson successfully fired a 3D printed gun. It is called the Liberator and is the first of its kind in the world.

"When the government was going to limit gun control, what they were going to do was go after the manufacturer of the weapon," explained Kubin.

It was around the time when multiple school shootings were happening. The group got the idea of creating the first printable gun as a way of empowering people who felt as if the government was attacking their freedom.

"So the idea was to take advantage of sort of a loop hole in the law where you can manufacture weapons for yourself. I can make a gun for myself. I can go get galvanized pipe or whatever and I can make a weapon for myself, and it's okay, as long as I don't sell it," Kubin said.

While the organization, Defense Distributed doesn't see anything wrong with the 3D printable gun, there are some concerns with the availability of the files in a public domain which is why they are under an investigation by the Department of State.

"The design for the liberator pistol, shortly after it was put up, Cody got a letter basically telling him, 'We'd like you to take this thing down,'" Kubin added.
