Four law enforcement officers were wounded, one of them seriously, and scores of officers were surrounding a house near Sacramento, Calif., where the suspect was barricaded Friday night, authorities said.

At least 10 local and federal law enforcement agencies converged on a house in a neighborhood of Roseville, a city of 125,000 people northeast of the state capital. The man, who was armed with an assault-style weapon, was alone in the house and was talking with police by phone, Roseville police Lt. Cal Walstad said Friday night.

"We've seen him as he looked out, and we know he's in there," Walstad said. "In these types of situations, it's better to just wait and talk."

Authorities initially said three officers had been wounded: a special agent of the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement who was shot in the leg and two Roseville police officers who were hit by shrapnel.

Late Friday, police revised the report, saying that in addition to the ICE agent, two Roseville officers had been shot and a that a third had been hit by shrapnel.

The officers were being treated at Sutter Roseville Medical Center, the hospital and police said. The ICE agent and two of the police officers were reported as stable, and the fourth victim was in serious condition.

None of their identities was released.

Authorities identified the suspect as Sammy Duran, 23. He was confronted Friday afternoon during what Roseville police described as a gang operation.

Duran was described as a Hispanic male wearing a dark beanie, a gray short-sleeve shirt and white pants. He was described as extremely dangerous, and residents in the area were urged to remain inside.

Walstad said Duran was a parolee who had been wanted for several weeks. ICE agents were supporting local authorities in trying to capture him when he shot the ICE agent shortly after 3 p.m., Walstad said.

Duran then ran off and jumped a fence, with dozens of officers in pursuit, he said.

Chris Conley, a neighborhood resident, told NBC station KCRA of Sacramento that he heard several volleys of gunshots, first about 3 p.m. and again beginning about 5 p.m.

"I'm not really sure where he is ... but I can see a bunch of officers getting ready," Conley said.
