JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Changing the name of a road may not seem like a big deal, but when you're a road warrior or a casual driver who depends on a GPS it matters.
Many GPS users fail to update their navigational device and they should.
"The roads change about 15% a year," said Elmar Vonkurzbach.
Vonkurzbach is with the Best Buy Geek Squad. He said that GPS manufacturers update their maps every three to six months.
"Make sure you update, depending on how old the unit is, I would say just go ahead and purchase a new one that way you get thenewest firmware," said Vonkurzbach.
"Some companies guarantee a lifetime update," he added.
The cost to update your GPS with new maps can cost as much as $80; compare the cost of update to the cost of a new one to determine which is the best option.
Updating is simple:
1) Visit the manufacturers website.
2) Connect your GPS to the computer with a USB cable.
3) Start the download.
