Governor Nathan Deal, along with AT&T Georgia President Sylvia Russell said on Thursday that AT&T will now look to fill over 1,000 positions in Georgia.

Of the open positions, 600 are new jobs.

Job candidates include those interested in full-time or part-time work. Positions fall in network construction and maintenance, customer support, retail and others.

"Georgia businesses and consumers are using more communications services such as wireless and broadband," Deal said. "These jobs will provide opportunities for our citizens in one of the fastest-growing parts of the Georgia economy and will help build critical communications infrastructure and provide customer support."

A spokesperson for Deal's office said AT&T's new Project Velocity IP is behind many of the open jobs. The investment is AT&T's plan to grow and enhance its national wireless and wired IP broadband networks.

As the company puts Project Velocity IP to work, it will develop over 10,000 macro sites, 1,000 antenna systems and 40,000 small cells as it increases the density of its wireless network, the spokesperson said.

By the end of 2015, AT&T hopes to have enhanced IP Broadband network coverage in 75 percent of customer locations.

"As AT&T continues to invest in our network and expand our customer base in Georgia, we're committed to providing excellent customer service," Russell said. "We applaud Governor Deal and the members of the Georgia General Assembly who are working to create a business-friendly environment where industries want to invest and create job opportunities for Georgians."
