BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- Some residents of Brunswick received troubling telephone calls on Wednesday. The callers on the other end of the line informed them one of their relatives was being held hostage.
But it wasn't true.
It's all part of an elaborate phone scam soliciting money, which is all to common, according to Brunswick Police Department's Facebook page.
According to reports, the caller claimed to be holding a close relative ransom until money was paid.
Wednesday's calls came from the area code of 954. The calls are usually made from prepaid cell phone numbers.
The BPD advises not to answer calls from numbers they do not know.
People who receive similar calls are asked to contact the relative in question.
BDP advises that callers should not disclose any personal or financial information to the caller.
