Viewer takes issue with JEA digital smart meters

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Colin called First Coast News and said he believes he has a problem with a new digital smart meter. 

He said his water bill was routinely above $1,000 a month.

FCN called JEA Spokesperson Gerri Boyce told FCN that Colin said the problem was with his toilet and was eventually fixed.

It turns out JEA doesn't have smart meters for water.

According to Boyce, there are however 57,000 electric smart meters installed to measure electricity usage. Boyce said there are 15,000 scheduled for installation next year.

JEA spokesperson, Gerri Boyce, disputes Colin's claim saying that his bill was not $1000. According to Boyce, Boyce said for the month he (Colin) used the largest amount of water (July). Boyce said Colin's bill totaled $933.92 (which includes $523.79 for water. According to Boyce, there was a past due amount of over $400.

Boyce said Colin's service was disconnected for non-payment in July and again in late August.
