                          Sheets of Hope
Collects 6,732 Sheets for The City Rescue Mission

First Coast residents answered the call and donated 6,732 sheets to the First Coast News Sheets of Hope drive Friday, December 16th.  These sheets will provide comfort to people staying overnight in shelters.

According to The City Rescue Mission, the agency goes through roughly 500 sheet sets a night.  They're washed each day so they are fresh for the next person seeking safe shelter.  With the addition of the new women's center, The City Rescue Mission will be able to house three times the amount of women and women with children that they ever have before.  There are 4,500 people on the streets of Jacksonville every day, but only 800 beds available to them.  Sheets of Hope will help make that gap smaller.

Spearheaded by First Coast News Anchor, Jeannie Blaylock, First Coast News set up collection sites at Orange Park Mall and St. Johns Town Center inviting the community to stop by and donate new or gently used sheets.

 And what a success!

Sheets of Hope raised enough sheets for almost every homeless person in Jacksonville to have two sheets.  "A nice warm sheet, or a cool sheet, is like a big hug.  It surrounds you with love and comfort," says Ernest, a resident at The City Rescue Mission.

The donations came from schools, churches, businesses, organizations and families all across the First Coast.  The Sheets of Hope donation drive benefits The City Rescue Mission which provides shelter to hundreds of homeless people every night.  In 2010, The City rescue Mission provided 97,079 nights of safe shelter to the homeless and needy of Jacksonville.
