Leephor Spivey sentenced to 23 years in prison for shooting at birthday party

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Thursday afternoon a 51-year-old man learned he will spend 23 years in prison for shooting his nephew at a New Year's Day birthday party.

A judge sentenced Leephor Spivey Thursday afternoon, a release from State Attorney Angela Corey's office said.  Spivey's sentence is for the charge of attempted manslaughter with a weapon.

Spivey will also serve 23 years with three of them mandatory on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Spivey's sentences will run concurrently the release said.

Spivey was found guilty of shooting his nephew, Bryan Williams, at a birthday party on New Year's Day 2012.

Spivey shot Williams three times, according to the release.

Williams spent two months in the hospital before he died from his injuries.

Spivey is considered a habitual felony offender the State Attorney's Office said.  He has previous felony convictions for DUI and aggravated assault.
