JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- UNF Football fans are seriously optimistic.

After all, they're undefeated.

But pretty soon, they might have actually a team to cheer for.

"It's actually inevitable. It's just a question is it in a few years or 10 or 15," said University President John Delaney.

He says they'll get there eventually.

He's aiming 5 to 10 years out, but there are no guarantees.

There's a lot that goes in to making a football program, and UNF still has a long way to go.

They're in the process of gauging student interest.

Even if it's popular, the school still has to figure out how to pay for it.

Students already pay 16 dollars a credit hour to fund athletics, and Delaney says the money won't come out of academics.

"The football is almost like a separate company, it generates its own income. And so we would isolate that, it's got to pay it's own way. There's no money that we would shift from the academic side to athletics," he said.

Right now UNF has a population of about 16,000 undergrads, and Delaney says they'll likely have to wait until they have closer to 25-thousand to support the program.

But if they can get it up and running, he knows it would be worth it.

"I can remember the first Jaguar game. everyone walked in from different parts of town, races religions, and they were all for the same thing, so it's a unifier," he said.

Their target date right now is near 2017.
