Burned woman found in brush fire near Arlington Expressway

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A woman who was badly burned in a brush fire died Sunday, according to her son.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has not released the name of the woman.

A motorist reported seeing a brush fire while driving near Arlington Expressway at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

When police and firefighters with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department arrived at a brush fire, they discovered a female who had been burned in the tree line where University Boulevard and Colcord Avenue meet.

The woman was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Chuck Ford, with JSO.

Homicide detectives and the state fire marshal are investigating, Ford said.

Police are unable to determine if the woman was set on fire.

Ford did confirm the fire was quickly extinguished and was contained to the area where the woman was found.

The investigation is still ongoing to determine why the woman was burned.
