TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida Power and Light has a big impact on the state's economy, with more than 100,000 employees.

Now it's taking economic development into its own hands.

FPL has developed a website that allows prospective businesses to search locations for data on the workforce, wages, transportation and even commuting times. The state's largest utility put together the extensive online package of Florida facts to try to attract new businesses to Florida.

FPL President Eric Silagy says PoweringFlorida.com is the first economic development tool of its kind for Florida.

Usually economic development is handled by state and local governments, but Silagy says FPL wants to help.

"We believe strongly that it's the role of the private sector, not just government, to try to help Florida grow and turn around from the economic downturn that we had in the last couple of years. We can't just rely on government to do these things for us. The private sector has to step up and this is a way that Florida Power and Light can invest back into Florida to try to help it grow and help all of us succeed."

The website has two sections: one is public, while the other is geared toward economic development professionals.

The website launched about 10 days ago and it has already attracted thousands of visitors from around the world, including Germany, France, Poland, India, Morocco and 35 other states.
