BUNNELL, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving a Flagler County Sheriff's deputy that closed parts of West State Road 100 for hours Wednesday morning.
The crash happened at about 6:38 a.m. at the intersection with Black Point Road and involved two cars, according to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol.
Dep. Christopher Lee Crego was responding to a report of another traffic crash, when he allegedly rear-ended a white van being driven by 64-year-old Eduardo Luis Pacheco, the release detailed.
Pacheco was ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene, according to FHP on scene.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the driver of the other vehicle and our deputy," Sheriff James L. Manfre wrote in a press release.
Dep. Crego was transported to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach with non-life threatening injuries and is scheduled to undergo surgery later today, according to the FCSO.
"We wish Deputy Crego a speedy recovery," said Sheriff Manfre. Crego has been with the Sheriff's Office for a year and a half.
