TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A lot of Florida Democrats think U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson might be their strongest candidate to defeat Gov. Rick Scott in 2014, but Nelson said he has no intention of running for governor.

Nelson has just started his third term in the U.S. Senate after easily defeating Republican Connie Mack last November.

Florida Democrats see Nelson as their strongest statewide candidate at a time when Gov. Rick Scott is vulnerable with low approval ratings.

But Nelson said he feels he's best positioned in the U.S. Senate to help Floridians.

"I'm not planning to run for governor. I have no intention of running for governor. I've got plenty to do serving as a senator of this state and that's why I'm here today in my role as senator."

Nelson surely would like to see a Democrat in the governor's office, so he was asked what he thought about Charlie Crist as the Democratic candidate for governor.

Nelson replied with a smile: "I'm not getting into that."
