JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There are around 400 little lives waiting at the Jacksonville Humane Society on Beach Boulevard. As families browse the cages, Purina is helping the Jacksonville Humane Society make getting a pet a little easier on those who are 55 and older.
Purina will cover the adoption cost of dogs and cats for adults 55 and older, which in some cases can range up to $120.
"It is wonderful, you are saving a life," says Robin Reed as she carries a young pup home to be fostered.
While the program is great for the four-legged friends, Jacksonville Humane Society Executive Director Denise Deisler says having a pet often helps improves an older adult's quality of life.
"You have got something to look forward to coming home to. There is something there that loves you and is always happy to see you," tells Deisler.
Also those 55 and older may want to consider an adult dog instead of a puppy.
But no matter what you choose, those coming to adopt and foster pets say animals bring always bring two things.
"Unconditional love and they are just entertainment, watching them play and grow and learn," says Reed.
