JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida for now is scrapping the idea of fielding a football team.

UNF President John Delaney made the announcement in an email Thursday to faculty, staff and students.

"We just can't make it work," Delaney stated.

In January the university began exploring the idea of starting a football program.

"I have long said that a Florida university needs enrollment of about 25,000 students to properly support football," said Delaney in his email.

UNF currently has an enrollment of 16,500 students

Delaney said he is willing revisit the topic in the future when the time is right for UNF.

Student reaction to the decision was mixed with some expressing the opinion a foot team would have been nice, others saying its not a factor.

"I'm not too disappointed, it is what is is," said Caleb Robinson who is from Atlanta.

"It would have been exciting," said Beatrice Hunt who is from Jacksonville and will graduate later this month from UNF.

The university says student fees would have been increased to support a football team which was an option the school found unattractive.

"You cannot use tuition so we would have to fund it with student fees," said Sharon Ashton who is the school's Vice President of Public Relations.
