UPDATE, 5/10/13: The man shot by police has been identified by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office as Alberto F. Valdes, 58, of Lake City.
COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- The Columbia County Sheriff's Office confirmed that deputies with the Columbia County Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force fatally shot a man on Wednesday in the 600 block of NW Bronco Terrace.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, a Task Force attempted to make contact with persons residing in the home as part of a narcotics investigation. An individual exited the house armed with a shotgun.
The deputies ordered the individual to drop the weapon several times but the individual ignored the deputies commands and fired the shotgun at the deputies.
The Task Force feared for their lives and returned fire, killing the armed person.
The deputies were not injured during this confrontation.
Sheriff Mark Hunter of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office has requested the investigative assistance of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
A search warrant was served at the same residence where the incident occurred, Thursday morning.
The Task Force deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, per Sheriff's policy, pending investigation into this incident.
The deceased individual was transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Jacksonville on Thursday to determine his identity and cause of death.
No other information regarding the deceased individual has been released by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office at this time.
