JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two communities on October 1 face losing their neighborhood libraries.

The City Council budget committee made that decision when reviewing the city's spending plans.

The Brentwood branch library on Pearl Street and the Maxville branch on the Westside would be closed if the full council agrees with the budget committee recommendation .

Four other library branches proposed to be closed were spared.

Patrons of the library on Pearl Street say the council is failing to account for the need of the community.

"It looks like everything is about the dollar," said Doretha Florence, who tutors students at the Brentwood branch.

David Sallie said City Hall needs to recognize that not everyone in his neighborhood is connected to the internet and that libraries are a needed resource.

The full council in considering the final budget has the ability to vote against the recommendation to close two branches.

On Thursday, the council budget committee faces its biggest challenge as Sheriff John Rutherford is being given three hours to lay out the police budget.

Rutherford said public safety cannot afford any cuts. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office budget represents nearly one-third of the city's proposed spending plans.
