UPDATE, 10/21/13: Superior Construction, the company contracted to fix the Mathews Bridge, began its 20th day of repair work on the bridge.

The following tasks were completed or in process, according to the Florida Department of Transportation:

  • New sections of the chord is being installed at the west splice, referred to as a stub beam.
  • Permanent repairs continues.  Delivery of the long section of bottom chord is on site.
  • Bolt replacement continues.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Mathews Bridge will not be open to one-way traffic Monday. The goal is October 31 for all traffic, according to State Representative Lake Ray.

The bridge will hopefully be open for the Florida-Georgia Game November 2. Representative Lake Ray toured the damaged bridge Wednesday.

The Mathews Bridge fell four inches after a cargo ship hit the main beam in late September. Support beams have lifted the bridge two inches already. Crews are working to raise it the remaining two.

If things go well this week, the bridge could open for one-way traffic Monday morning -- one way in the morning, one way in the evening.

The Naval ship UNUS is still docked on the north shore of the St. Johns River between the Mathews and Hart bridges.

The impact forced 56,000 daily drivers to find a new way across the St. Johns river.

The project will cost nearly $3 million and will be paid by whom ever is responsible for the incident.
