JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Dense fog hovered over the First Coast Monday morning, delaying a cruise ship's entry into port and its departure as well.

The dock where the Carnival cruise ship pulls up - was empty Monday morning.

The St. Johns Bar Pilot Association - in charge of safely guiding ships from sea into port - had closed the harbor because of the fog shortly after midnight Monday.

That kept the Carnival Fascination from being able to dock at the JAXPORT cruise terminal.

People who were expecting to board the cruise ship around 10 a.m. were turned away and told to return around 2 p.m.

One passenger said from his front seat, "This was my first cruise. I thought it was broken down but it got foggy on me. My mother's having a fit."

Another passenger said, "It happens. Weather is weather. At least it was not a snowstorm."

When hopeful passengers returned around 2:00 p.m., the cruise ship was finally at the dock but they were still turned away until about 4:00 p.m.

Nancy Rubin with JAXPORT said, "Between Carnival and Jacksonville Port Authority, we do everything in our power to avoid any interference with our passenger plans. But sometimes the unavoidable comes up."

Passengers like Thunder Young, his wife, and friends from North Carolina did not seem upset about the delays as they had a picnic at a nearby gas station.

"It's just one of those things. Gotta be patient," Young said. "Now if it's this time tomorrow (Tuesday) night I'm not on a boat, I'll be upset."

Carnival Cruise Lines says the ship finally left round 5 p.m. Monday bound for Nassau.
