TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A First Coast volunteer center received an award from Gov. Rick Scott on Tuesday for its yearly "A Visit from St. Nicholas" program.

Scott presented the Champion of Service award to HandsOn Jacksonville during Tuesday's Cabinet meeting, according to a release from the governor's office.

This year, "A Visit from St. Nicholas" provided backpacks stuffed with toys and books to nearly 7,000 kids at 14 Title 1 Jacksonville-area schools.

With the help of 800 volunteers, the school classrooms are decorated with tinsel, volunteers come and read stories of kindness and St. Nick himself comes and visits with students.

"I am proud to present HandsOn Jacksonville with the Volunteer Florida Champion of Service Award in recognition of their efforts to provide our students with the tools they need to succeed," Scott said. "The hard work and generosity of the HandsOn Jacksonville staff and volunteers will make a difference in the lives of our students long after the holiday season. I applaud the thousands of volunteers across our state who dedicate their time to making the season bright for Florida families."
