JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is hosting their first gun buyback of 2014 on Jan. 11.

The buyback event will take place at the Evangel Temple Assembly of God located at 5755 Ramona Boulevard, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Individuals will receive $50 in cash per gun they turn in to police at the event.

The Jan. 11 gun buyback event is the third hosted by JSO in the past 12 months. During JSO's first event in June 2013 539 guns were returned. During the Oct. 2013 event more than 300 guns were turned in before the doors had even been open for two hours. By days end, 683 firearms were recovered.

Mike Williams, Director of Investigations of Homeland Security, said "this will be the last gunback event for a while due to funding.

Williams confirmed, "$50 cash no questions asked, the process takes less than 2 minutes."

According to JSO, funding for the gun buyback and the Gun Bounty program (See It, Say It, Stop It) are being underwritten by the Delores Barr Weaver Fund and The Community Foundation of Northeast Florida and the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Michael Jennings, who has seen the city's violence first hand, said gun buybacks area big step toward making the streets safer.

"It'll help make the city safer -- it'll help put the city on the road to being safer," Jennings said. "Either way, it's better for everybody all around."
