LEESBURG, Fla. - A 47-year-old man was shot and killed by a Eustis detective after he threatened the detective with a gun during an investigation into child sexual misconduct, police said.
Investigators from Leesburg and Eustis and the Department of Children and Families went to the Laurel Oaks Apartment complex in Leesburg on Tuesday to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct with a child under 12 and possession of child pornography.
Detectives began speaking with the suspect, Vernum H. Blunk, 47, and at some point during the investigation, Blunk grabbed a handgun that was hidden in the room, according to police.
He threatened Detective Sgt Gary Winheim, and the Winheim fired multiple shots and killed him, police said.
According to police, Winheim gave Blunk verbal commands and was in fear for his life before the shooting.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident, and Winheim is on administrative leave, as is customary in all police-involved shootings.
Winheim has been with the department since March 1996 and supervises the detective division.
