JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- On Wednesday night, some of the NBA's future stars will be playing in a preseason game at the Veterans Memorial Arena, but on Tuesday night, it was some of the biggest stars from basketball's past that took center stage.
Rick Barry, David Thompson, George Gervin, Julius Erving, and Christian Laettner were all on hand at the arena to see Jacksonville University legend Artis Gilmore receive a special honor.
Mayor Alvin Brown proclaimed Tuesday as Artis Gilmore Day in the City of Jacksonville. Mayor Brown also retired Gilmore's jersey on behalf of the city. What this means is that Gilmore's name and number will be permanently displayed on a banner in the rafters for all events held at the arena. Previously, his name and number were only visible when the JU basketball team played their home games at the arena.
On Wednesday evening, the Orlando Magic and New Orleans Pelicans will be playing a preseason game at the Veterans Memorial Arena beginning at 7 PM.
