Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Ryan Harrow scored 16 points, leading three
players in double figures, as the Kentucky Wildcats held on to defeat the
Vanderbilt Commodores, 60-58, in SEC action at Memorial Gym.
Also scoring in double figures for the Wildcats (10-4, 1-0 SEC) were Nerlens
Noel and Archie Goodwin with 13 and 12 points, respectively, the former adding
seven rebounds and three blocked shots as the visitors won their second in a
row and the sixth in the last seven outings.
The Commodores (6-7, 0-1) were paced by Kedren Johnson who scored a game-high
18 points, adding six assists and four steals, but he shot just 2-of-9 behind
the 3-point line as the squad lost for the third time in four tries. Rod Odom
checked in with 12 points, but he too converted just 2-of-9 on the perimeter
and was a mere 3-of-16 from the floor overall.
Kentucky took the lead right out of the gate, building a 15-point advantage in
the first half on the strength of 57.7 percent shooting from the floor, before
settling in with a 35-24 edge at the break.
The Commodores, who shot just 27.8 percent from the floor in the first half,
converted only 38.2 percent in the second half, but that didn't stop the squad
from battling back from an 18-point deficit in the frame.
Vandy's first lead of the night, 49-47, came with just over six minutes to
play on a baseline dunk by Sheldon Jeter.
The Wildcats, who regained the lead on a 3-pointer by Harrow at the 4:58 mark,
took a 60-55 lead with just over 17 seconds to play on a layup by
Noel that appeared to come after the shot-clock had expired.
Johnson closed the gap the next time down the floor as he connected on a 3-
pointer with less than 10 seconds remaining to make the score 60-58.
With 6.7 seconds left, the Commodores forced a turnover which gave them one
more opportunity to either go for the tie or the win, but a 3-pointer by
Johnson from the right wing missed the mark as time expired.
Kentucky survived despite turning the ball over 16 times and shooting a mere
3-of-17 beyond the arc.
