With the victory, Saint Joseph's now heads to the quarterfinals on Friday
where it will take on second-seeded VCU.
The seventh-seeded Musketeers (17-14) were paced by Travis Taylor who tallied
16 points and pulled down nine rebounds, followed by Brad Redford and Semaj
Christon with 14 and 10 points, respectively, although the latter shot just 3-
of-14 from the floor on the evening.
The Hawks shot a disappointing 37.5 percent from the floor in the first half,
including 2-of-9 behind the 3-point line, but thanks to a perfect 8-of-8 at
the free-throw line the team was able to establish a 28-25 lead at the break.
In the second half a 10-0 run by Xavier gave the Musketeers an eight-point
edge midway through the period, but immediately thereafter Saint Joseph's
registered a 12-0 run of its own in order to surge ahead yet again.
After Galloway gave the Hawks the one-point lead in the waning moments, Xavier
had a chance to win the game as it threw the inbounds pass the length of the
court. The ball deflected off the backboard at the other end of the floor and
landed in the hands of Isaiah Philmore who was three feet from the basket, but
his layup attempt bounced off the back of the rim as time expired.
