Katy, TX (Sports Network) - The No. 6 seed Sam Houston State Bearkats earned
the upset victory over the No. 3 Oral Roberts Golden Eagles by score of 58-55
in the quarterfinals of the Southland Conference Tournament to advance to the
semifinals where they will face No. 2 Northwestern State.
The Bearkats (17-16, 8-10 Southland) have won two in a row in the tournament
after a two-game slump to end the regular season. Paul Baxter scored 13 points
and Terrance Motley added 12 for the Bearkats in the win.
For the Golden Eagles (18-14, 13-5), Warren Niles managed 19 points in a
losing effort, while Korey Billbury contributed 12 points.
After shooting 60 percent from the field in the first half, the Golden
Eagles held a 36-29 lead at halftime.
The Bearkats tightened up their defense in the second half and held Oral
Roberts to just 21.7 percent shooting from the field, including 0-of-7 from
beyond the arc. Motley hit back-to-back buckets for the Bearkats in the final
two minutes to extend their lead back to six after ORU closed to within two
points. Despite late efforts from the Golden Eagles, Sam Houston State was
able to hold on.
