Brooklyn, NY (Sports Network) - Chaz Williams led the way with 16 points and
eight assists as the sixth-seeded Massachusetts Minutemen downed the No. 11
seed George Washington Colonials, 77-72, in a final first-round game of the
Atlantic 10 Tournament at the Barclays Center.
Terrell Vinson and Trey Davis each added 14 points for the Minutemen (20-10),
while Raphiael Putney chipped in with 12 points. UMass will now face No. 3
seed Temple in a quarterfinal game on Friday night.
For the Colonials (13-17), Kevin Larsen led all scorers with 17 points, Isaiah
Armwood posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, Lasan Kromah
scored 11 points and Joe McDonald finished with 10 points.
UMass took a 34-31 advantage into the break. It shot 41.4 percent from the
field and 3-of-9 from 3-point range. GW was held to just 26.5 percent
shooting from the field, missing all five of its 3-point tries in the first
In the second half, the Colonials heated up from the floor, connecting on 51.5
percent of their field goal tries, but remained shut out from the perimeter,
shooting 0-of-3 from 3-point range. The Minutemen improved to 48.5 percent
from the field and knocked down 4-of-11 from 3-point distance after halftime.
After a closely played half, GW lead by four, 68-64, with 2:43 to play, but
UMass finished the game on a 13-4 run to close out the contest and continue on
to the quarterfinal round.
GW had a significant advantage on the boards, outrebounding UMass 50-32. The
Colonials finished the game a perfect 25-of-25 from the free-throw line but 0-
of-8 from the 3-point arc.
