Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Sunday
that Jose Valverde will not be his closer for Game 2 of the American League
Championship Series against the New York Yankees.
Valverde blew the save in Game 1 on Saturday night. He failed to protect a 4-0
lead, yielding two-run homers to Ichiro Suzuki and Raul Ibanez in the ninth
The Tigers still won the game in 12 innings, 6-4.
"(Valverde) is the closer, but I will not close with him today," Leyland said
before Game 2 on Sunday. "I'll look at it and see how things play out, see how
we feel about (his) work with (pitching coach Jeff Jones), see if we feel he's
ready to get back into that situation."
The Tigers could use right-handers Joaquin Benoit or Octavio Dotel in the
closer role, while lefty Phil Coke could also be an option.
