TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida State hopes to achieve at least one of its preseason goals this weekend.
The Seminoles (7-4) visit archrival Florida (6-5) on Saturday in quest of a second straight win in the series to retain the mythical state championship that's won by sweeping Miami and the Gators.
The preseason hype that had Florida State a shoo-in for an Atlantic Coast Conference title and possibly more has long ago dissipated. The Seminoles are fighting to avoid one of those 7-6 seasons that became all too common in the last decade and led to the departure of long-time coach Bobby Bowden.
Second-year coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday that it takes time to rebuild the program to where it was in Bowden's heyday. Fisher said he believes they're getting close.
Maybe next year.
