PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass has two very special Marshals on the 17th hole at THE PLAYERS Championship: Nathan Lynn and Kevin Garland. Both are Wounded Warriors.
"I know nothing about golf ... So, I just kind of showed up and I'm hoping I can watch people around me and kind of play it by ear," Lynn said.
Marshal Captain Ron Smith connected with the Wounded Warriors program to sponsor two veterans a year to be marshals for the 17th hole. He wasn't in the military himself, but wanted to do his part to help those who have given so much.
"To see them with some smiles when their favorite golfer comes by, just makes me feel good inside." Smith said.
For the past four years, Smith has paid for the fees and all associated costs for the Wounded Warrior marshals. Volunteers are usually responsible for paying their own fees and costs to be at THE PLAYERS.
Ron Smith has been a marshal for 15 years.
