JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Duval County Public Schools is set to have a lengthy school board meeting Tuesday night.
The seven page agenda has several important issues including a discussion on the termination of former teacher Michael Worrell. Worrell was removed from a 4th grade classroom at Greenfield Elementary School just two days into the school year. He is facing multiple sexual battery charges. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office report says three juveniles came forward and said Worrell sexually battered them inside local hotels between 2006 and 2012.
Worrell began as a substitute teacher in 2003 and was hired to be a full-time teacher in 2006. He was suspended without pay and tonight board members will discuss his termination.
Also on the agenda tonight is the selling of Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School. It was closed a decade ago and the land off Moncrief is contaminated with incinerator arsenic, lead and other harmful materials according to the EPA.
At a board meeting in May it was decided that the land was "unsuitable for educational purposes."
According to the agenda from tonight's meeting, Mt. Sinai Missionary Holiness Church will buy the old school and land for $1,000.
Prior to the 6 p.m. school board meeting, the board will have a workshop to discuss the contract negotiations for Dr. Nikolai Vitti. That will be at 4:30 at the DCPS administration building.
